Description: TERRE ROUGE means "Red Earth". This vermillion-colored soil is one of the hallmarks of their region. The vineyards are in soils that are largely granite and volcanic-based. The TERRE ROUGE portfolio is composed of wines made from Rhône varietals grown in the rugged and varying terroirs of this region: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. High elevation sites up to 3200ft asl, contribute to the complexity of their wines. Domaine de la Terre Rouge began bottling Roussanne on an annual basis in 2001. This is a single vineyard bottling from the Monarch Mine Vineyard. It is planted with a clone of the Roussanne grape that originated from a Chave family (famous French wine producer) parcel on the hill at Hermitage. This is a difficult variety to grow and it ripens unevenly, so it must be harvested selectively and not all at the same time. This wine has classic Roussanne characteristics: Straw golden color; with exquisite quince, honeyed nuts, and beeswax aromas. It has a very rich and silky mouth feel and excellent minerality. Bottle-aged two years prior to release. A rare European-styled wine that is wonderfully balanced and built for the long haul. This is a serious and age-worthy white wine that will really show its full potential at 5+ years of age. Worth drinking now and saving some for later.
Food pairings: Pungent cheeses, chicken (roasted, grilled), lobster, fish, veal, shellfish, etc.
